Store Concerns / Drains and Hygiene

When a store drain is slow or has an odor

Drain flow and odors can involve multiple areas, including the drain opening, trap, grease trap, pipes, and the building's drainage system. Before adding chemicals, clarify the symptoms and the affected area.

First, assess the affected area and urgency

Check whether the issue affects just one sink or multiple drains, when it started, and whether there is backflow, a leak, or an unusual odor. If water is overflowing onto the floor, a leak continues, or backflow occurs at multiple locations, follow the store’s emergency contact procedures and promptly contact the facility manager or designated contractor.

Do not mix different cleaning agents or add a strong chemical when the situation is unclear. If you have used a cleaning agent, tell the person in charge or contractor its product name and when it was used.

Distinguishing Between Drain Openings, Traps, and Grease Traps

The debris basket and visible dirt at the drain opening, the water seal in the trap, grease and residue in the grease trap, and pipe clogs each require different checks and work. If odors persist, possible causes may include not only insufficient cleaning but also a dried-out water seal, ventilation, piping, or building equipment.

For disassembly or plumbing work beyond the cleaning tasks store staff can perform as part of their daily routine, follow the store manager’s instructions and consult a specialist.

Drain Openings and Debris Baskets
We check for food residue, dirt, and water flow as part of the store’s routine cleaning procedures.
Drain Traps and Odors
We check the water seal and condition of the components. Before disassembly or using chemicals, we check the procedures and equipment specifications.
Grease Traps
We check the cleaning date, the condition of grease and residue, and cleaning records.
Blockages or backflow at multiple locations
Because the building’s drainage system may be involved, we’ll contact the facility manager.

Information to share when contacting us

Please provide the store location, affected equipment, when the symptoms began, their scope, impact on business operations, any past cleaning or repairs, and whether chemicals have been used. For multiple stores, it is helpful to list the affected locations and their response status.

If work is needed, we will confirm in advance which services are required—drain cleaning, grease trap cleaning, pipe cleaning, or equipment inspection—as well as whether an on-site inspection is needed, the work duration, protective measures, and waste handling.

FAQ / QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

If there is an odor from the drain, should I use a chemical right away?

Do not add or mix chemicals if you are unsure whether they are compatible with the equipment or chemicals already used. Check where the issue occurred, whether there is backflow or a leak, and which product was used. Then consult the person in charge or a specialist contractor in accordance with store procedures.

What if the flow is slow at multiple drains, not just one?

The building’s drainage system may be involved, not just the store’s equipment. Check store procedures to see whether water use should be limited, and contact the facility manager or designated contractor.

The information presented is general guidance to help organize the conditions at your store. We will advise on whether work can be carried out, the method, and the cost after confirming the equipment specifications, contract, region, and on-site conditions. In an emergency or if there is a hazard, follow the store’s official safety and hygiene procedures and the facility manager’s instructions first.
